BLENHEIM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

There were present at the fortnightly meeting of the Blenheim Borcugh. Council last night his Worship the Mayor (Mr A. MeCallum), Councillors Ching, Garr, Macey, McKinley, Brown, White,. Birch. OPENING UP LAND. Messrs McLu.ucb.lan and Co. wrote stating that they Mere putting in a right-of-way , through from High Street to Alfred Street, from the private right-oi-way known as The Express Avenue, thus opening up the land at present used as a paddock, commonly known as the National Bank section. They required to know what work in the way of formation would be stipulated by the Council.- -The matter was referred to the Works Committee. ' . THE GASWORKS. Councillor Birch, Chairman of the <*as. Committee, reported that it had been decided to send the station meter to Sydney for repairs, also some ordinary meters.. Some necessary tools had been allowed Mr Taylor, the manager. The new Livesey washer had arrived. As to the new retorts, which would", arrive' shortly, Mr Taylor favoured erecting a small arch capable- of holding four retorts instead of six. He moved that a 12ffc by 12ft dining-room be built at the rear of the old retorts. The bricks from the old retorts could be utilised. Councillor Carr thought the stokers' accommodation should be in such a place that they could always , keep an eye over the whole yard. The motion was carried. The discussion took place as to the accommodation of the new sel of retorts. The Manager (Mr Taylor) urged that instead of the six retorts being set in one bed, four only be set in the new bed. With the old bed of six, they would have ten retorts, which would give them all y they required for years. It would be against economy to keep two beds, of *six retorts each heated while only «tsen. retorts needed charging. The recommendation of/the Manager was adopted. / . \ Councillor Birch.,'reported, thatthe Manager should not be ..'expected; to -take the'reading of meters. It was, he thought, a waste of good services i>o put the Manager^ and a second man. on ■ meter-reading. ..' The 'present Gas Clerk (Mr Dcs Forges) could not, ■owing to physical inability, undertake ineter-roading, nor did his schedule of duties provide for it.
