Dr Nairn has this week motored to Nelson and back. The many friends of Mr C. Molloy will be sorry to learn that he is in the Hospital rather seriously ill. Major Hughes, D.5.0., acting Staff Officer to Colonel Robin, Chief of the Defence Staff, has been enjoying some trout fishing in Marlborough. Captain Gillespie has arrived in Nelson in connection with the flotation of a coal company at Golden Bay, for > which Mr J. Porter Harris has been appointed the Nelson broker. Messrs V. E. Logan and R. Foster, telephone exchange clerk and despatch clerk respectively at the local office, have received notice of appointment to cadetships in the learners' school at Oamaru. The Waihi. .Daily. Telegraph states that Mr Herries, Member for the Bay of Plenty, has decided to.contest the newly formed Tauranga seat at the next general election. Mr J. A. Young, of Hamilton, contests the same seat in the Liberal interests. Mr and Mrs F. H. Richmond, of "The Cliffs" (formerly of Richmond Brook), left Nelson on Wednesday last for an extended tour in the Souths which will include visits to the Southern Alps and the cold lakes. The trip is being taken at the recommendation of Mrs Richmond's medical adviser. Mr H. Adams, Assistant Government Geologist, is to carry out a preliminary survey of the oil-bearing country near Gisborne. He leaves on Thursday. Dr Bell, Director of the Geological Survey, will afterward^ complete the work. Dr Bell leaves shortly for the Heaphy River, Nelson, to carry out geological survey work. He will be accompanied by Mr Colin Fraser, of the same department. Mr Charles Parker, who has been connected for several years with Messrs W- E. Clouston and. C, has severed his connection with that firm, having taken over the produce and auctioneering business of Mr Nicol in Wellington. Mr Nicol is joining his brothers, of Blenheim, in the working of a. large farm in the Waikato. At the Wesley Church last evening Mr Parker was the recipient of a token lof the esteem in which he is held, he having been a trustee and Sunday I school worker. Mr Parker leaves for Wellington to-night. ! At the complimentary benefit acj corded Mr Alfred Hill in Dunedih—" an extra performance of "A Moorish Maid"—the sum of £100 was realised. Mr -tiill was also presented . with a gold-mounted baton.by the chorus and j principals. It is Mr Hill's.intention !to settle in Wellington shortly to practise the profession of which he is so skilled an exponent. Mr Hill intends to establish an orchestra in Wellington, to be called "the Alfred Hill ! Orchestra^' the object of which will |be the study of the - better class of i music. '
