The heat will have a disastrous effect on the pastures of the country, and fears are expressed that if it continues to- | morrow a disastrous-,'series oi, grass fires must result. • • Cool weather prevailed at 9 o'clock to-day m most places, exceptions being Timaru, where the thermometer registered 79, and Clyde (75). At the Hospital .Board meeting this afternoon Mr Neville reported that, becoming alarmed on Friday last or the danger the Wither grass fire threatened the hosgital buildings with): he had authorised someone to /get tof ether men to beat back the flames beind the grounds. A great number, of men had assisted, and he expected'the Board would receive an account from someone. If so, it should be paid, for, had the fire once got within the hospital grounds, there might have been a serious loss. Mr Parker explained that the Carter Trustees had put a gang of men on to fight the fire. Probably they would pay the expenses. It was finally decided publicly to thank all those who had assisted to beat back the fire in the vicinity of the hospital. The question of increasing the insurance on , the hospital buildings, was raised by the Chairman, and it was decided that the risk be augmented from £2170 to £3000,, in view of additions and improvements. < ..i. l i l MM^*.;.w.
