The enterprise and resource of the women of the village of Sergey, in the Swiss Canton of Vand, saved the entire village from being destroped recently. Fire broke out in one of the_ houses at night, and spread so rapidly that the whole village was threatened. The local firemen, and, in fact, most of the male population of the village, were absent on military service. Their wives and sisters, however, rose to the occasion. Giving the alarm, they rushed to the fire engine and dragged it to the scene of tiie fire, and while a number of women pumped up the water, others played the hose on the burning houses. Several women, to prevent the sparks setting fire to their dresses and hair, slipped on the men's helmets and jackets. Eventually they succeeded in overcoming the fire.
