Throwing stones on people's roofs after they are all in bed and asleep is, no doubt, a form of amusement that commends itself to a certain section of the genus hoodlum on account of its safety, as by the time that the master of the house has rushed to the door, the chicken-hearted "sports" are round the corner. Did these individuals but reflect —or, rather, had they any honourable feelings—the cowardliness of their action would come home to them; but louts who throw stones for fun have no time for power to remember that there are women and young children inside the houses they so bravely bombard.

The town of Roma, Queensland, is the scone of a strange phenomenon. Several years ago a bore was put down several hundred feet in search of a-rtosian water, but instead of water a supply of gas of high illuminating quality was struck. For over two years no uso was made of the gas, which was apparently inexhaustible in quantity. A loan was then raised, a gasometer was constructed, the town was reticulated, and businoss premises and private houses were connected with the mains. For a time everything went well, and the gas was largely availed of for both illuminating and heating purposes. Suddenly the supply failed, and Roma returned to the use of kerosene and firewood. All efforts to restore the supply proved futile, but now, after the lapse of a year or more, the gas has again appeared, and it is hoped that the supply will prove permanent.
