FIRE AT TEMUKA.

FOUR BUILDINGS CONSUMED

[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] TIMARU, Sept, 20. A fire broke out at Temuka this j morning, by which a block of four wooden buildings was totally destroyed. The fire when discovered had a strong hold. The brigade confined their efforts to saving the properties adjoining and on the opposite side of , the street. Of the premises destroyed, two were j owned by C. Bates and Co., and oo- ' cupied by C. Angus, plumber—who with his family occupied the rear portion of the building as a dwelling—

and Cameron, tobacconist and hairdresser. The other two, the property of Mrs C. Hornbrook, were tenanted by C. Winn, photographer, and Strange and Co., drapers. , For a time it was feared that the fire would spread into the Temuka Hotel, recently erected, but the brick wall saved it. The verandah and plate-glass windows of the adjoining shop were also destroyed, while other shop windows across the street were damaged. The fire apparently started in Cameron's shop, but there is no clue to its origin. The insurances are :—Bates, £450 in the Royal; Angus, £150 in the Manchester; Cameron, £200 in the Norwich Union; Winn, £75 in the Phcenix; Strange and Co., £100 in the Norwich Union and £100 in the Victoria. The premises of Mrs Hornbrook were not insured, the policy having been allowed to lapse a few days ago.
