At a meeting of the Marlborough Racing Club Committee held last evening it was resolved to hold the spring meeting at Riverlands on the 21st and 22nd November, the two days immediately succeeding the Agricultural Show. On the subject of technical education in New Zealand some very scathing comment was passed on Wednesday night, in the course of a lecture on coal tar, at Wellington., by Professor Easterfield, who is a believer in German thoroughness in all things. " Don't think," said the lecturer, "that if you send your sons to a technical school to learn chemistry eight hours a week they are' going to be able to solve scientific problems or make fortunes in the field of invention." The man who wishes to succeed in science must work all the day and part of the night. I consider the educational ideas we have in this colony are very flimsy, just as they are on many other things, for instance, socialism. I do not object to socialism, but the socalled socialists, here are rank individualists. Nearly all discoveries in science have been made by men who were indifferently paid, because they did not seek to enrich themselves, but to add to tue store of human knowledge."
