AUCKLAND, July 26. The contract let by the Government for the construction of the Arthur's Pass tunnel, on the Midland Railway at a cost of £600,000 was strongely commented upon at the Chamber of Commerce meeting to-day, the-'opinion being generally expressed that the money could be used in other ways so as to give better returns. A resolution was carried urging the Auckland Members of Parliament to combine in united action to secure a ! fair and just allocation to the Auckland province of moneys for railways and other public works, and, further, vigorously protesting against the expenditure sanctioned for the Arthur's Pass tunnel.
