Mr Thos. Fowl&r, the well-known North Bank settler, informed a reporter last evening that he has just returned from a thorough inspection of the country at the back of Tophouse. He was surprised at the extent and quality of the land. The Journal of the Department pt Labour for July has the following: — Blenheim.—Building trades: > Very busy: carpenters, painters, paperhangers, plumbers, and bricklayers are all fully employed. Engineering trade: Full time being worked, but work at this trade is nearly all in the nature of repairs. Boot trade (factories) : Bootmakers are doing a good retail business, and are also kept busy in making and repair departments. Clothing trade (factories): Fairly busy for this time of the year in the dressmaking and tailoring trades. Retail trade: Groceries and clothing, very good; boots, fairly busy. Miscellaneous : Blacksmiths, wheelwrights, and saddle and harness makers, fairly busy; cycle-repairing trade, busy; furniture and sash and door factories, fairly busy. Unskilled labour: Private'employment was found for four men during the month by the Department. There are very few idle men in this district at present, and no able-bodied man need be long out of employment.
