A private cablegram received in Dunedin to-day reports the death in Melbourne of Captain Chatfield, for many years in the Union Steamship Company's intercolonial service. An interesting experiment in river conservation is to be tried in this district. Mr A. Mackay, of the Lower Wairau, finding that the river was eroding his property, tried willowplanting as a remedy. The salt water, however, killed the plants off after the I first sprouting. He then approached Mr Moore, of the Stock Department, for advice, and that officer wrote to headquarters on the subject. He was advised to try the mangrove tree, procurable in North Auckland. One hundred and fifty plants were accordingly sent for, and arrived this morning. The mangrove thrives in salt water, but there is just a possibility that this "disbriet.. is too far removed from the Equator."for-the tropical growth. If successful, the experiment will lead to the poptilarity of the mangroves as an erosion preventive. ~ „
