THE NORTH ISLAND TRUNK LINE.

RAIL AND COACH CONNECTION

A recent traveller has given the Wcodville Examiner an account of the journey from Auckland to Wellington via the Main Trunk route: —

"The public service train leaves Taumaruniii, in the King Country, every morning at a quarter to seven for Raurimu, which is the present terminus of the northern section of the line. The rails are laid a considerable distance beyond. From Raurimu to the Makotoke viaduct a distance of 14 j miles had to be taken by coach. There [is a splendid service. The work at the big viaduct is being pushed ahead, and should be finished shortly after Christmas. From the viaduct on, a coach runs to Ohakune, meeting the coach from the northern end. The coachiug fare from Raurimu to Ohakune is 18s, a real good service being provided for that money. From Ohakune a public works train leaves for Taihape, carrying the mails. This arrives between six and seven o'clock. The road right through from Taumarunui to Ohakune is an excellent one. Several cyclists came through the same day as Mr Loveday, and he considers that even now the trip is the cheapest one to Auckland. Ohakune is the head of the Southern line, and is going ahead by leaps and bounds. Already there are about 1500 residents, and shop's and houses are going up in all directions; lOha^tHje is ,t;he centre of ah immense milling district. The trip through is a splendid one, someJ of the /seeiVeCT beingUnagriificent-.":. A •' ,-v
