Some comment lias been can seel in volunteer circles (says a Christchurch journal), by the appearance of a Gazette notice to the effect that the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal had been granted to a certain Canterbury volunteer who, it appears, some years ago was actually dismissed from the service for writing an anonymous letter of an insulting character to one of his superior officers. A somewhat heated debate took place in Parliament some years ago on the subject of his re-admission to the service, which was strongly objected to by officers in the Canterbury district, and it was alleged that this was brought about by political influence. An amendment to the Act was brought in by the Seddon Government to meet such a case, and but for this- the volunteer could not have been readmitted.
