The consigning firm, Messrs David Howeli and Co., England, wrote enclosing a list of charges on the ■bridge! The bridge had been inspected by a recognised Government engineer before being shipped. Messrs Burt and Co.'s inspection report was in--closed. Suggestions for the erection of the bridge were offered. Arrangements for the landing or the bridge were left with the Works Comanittee. GAS FOR THE HOSPITAL. The Wairau Hospital Board asked the Council whether it was prepared to lay on the gas to the Hospital if the Board would consume the gas for lighting, oooking and ironing. On the motion of the Mayor, the letter was handed to the Gas Committee, with instruction to obtain an estimate of cost and consequent receipts. Cr White said the Hospital Board was prepared to pay some part of the cost of laying mains. THE GASWORKS. A large number of replies from various Boroughs in reference to methods of staffing gasworks were received, and handed to the Gas Committee for a report. ' Cr Birch, Chairman of the Gas Committee, moved that certain removal work, to cost not more than £20, be done at the works, to enable the charging of the new retorts. —The work was authorised. •

Cr Birch reported that Mr F. L. Rabone had asked that the mains be - laid along Muller Road. Four connections to his houses were guaranteed, the consumption per month to be about £2 worth. The extension would cost £32j so that there was little hope of it "being carried out. Cr Brown said there had been other, new houses built in that road. Mr Jjenkins had just built one, and his firm was shortly commencing one for Mrs Munro at the Wilderness. He suggested that the Gas Committee find out how many connections would be made. Mr Rabone did not own the whole street. Cr Macey: The trouble is there is no money for such an extension. Or Brown: You can find out the payableness of the thing in the mean- - time. HOUSE DRAINAGE. Mr R. McCallum complained, on his own ar.cl neighbours' behalf; of the nuisance permitted by the Council at the corner of Litchfield and Weld Streets. The Sanitary Inspector stated he had been assured by the owner of the originating drain that it contained only ~ath and drain water. This appeared to be the common means of drainage in the locality. Mr Schauer had also visited the spot. Crs McKinley and Ching said they must rely on the sanitary expert. If he put his foot down on this kind of thing it would involve a big thing for the Borough. Cr Birch said Mr Rayner used the same water at his fellmon^ery, and no worse use could be made oi water than that. Cr Carr said that lie doubted whether other big houses in the locality -did not drain into the same ditch. On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to forward the Health Officer's report to Mr McCallum. GENERAL. Mr R. Brewer was given permission ~to place a culvert across the entrance from George Street, in front of his shop. The Foreman of Works was instructed to repair -Arthur Street from Market Street to the bottom of; the Town Hall section. f . The Town Hall Committee reeomxnended that the 500 chairs supplied by Mr T. Smale be retained, and some -of the others sold off.—The recommendation was adopted. The Foreman of Works was instructed to have the hedges of Seymour Square clipped by the regular staff.
