NEWFOUNDLAND.

NO DESIRE TO AMALGAMATE

WITH CANADA

[press association.] (Received" June 7, 8.23 a.m.)

LONDON, June 6

Mr Chamberlain, in a letter to the organisers of a dinner to Sir Robert Bond, said: "I trust that the difficulties in connection with the fisheries question will be satisfactorily arranged, and that this will be a prelude to that union with the great Dominion, of the. West which, I believe, will ultimately be found^most conducive to the permanent welfare of Newfoundland."

Sir Robert Bond remarked that the union of Newfoundland with Canada was at present neither desirable nor within the range of practical politics. Had the precis of the Imperial Conference been more adequate, what occurred at the Conference in relation to Newfoundland would not have been misrepresented in ihe press. He regretted that the Blue-Book withheld its discussions,- following his statement by describing the discussion as private.
