MARLBOROUGH LAND BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Land Board was held yesterday. There were present: The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr F. S. Smith), and Messrs Redwood, Seymour, Parsons, and Reader. - ■ J. Monk applied to lease bection I, Block XX., Hundalee S.D. (at present leased to John Pow, from year to year) as an accommodation place for coaches -and horses travelling between Cheviot and Kaikoura.—Deferred for further information regarding Mr Monk's intentions. F. Ward (Crown Lands Ranger) reported on W. Jacques's application for .a lease of Timber Reserve in Blocks VIII. and XII., Onamalutu S.D.—Mr J. A. Lambert wrote protesting against any of the green bush being leased. — It was decided to recommend the Governor that Mr Jacques's application be granted, subject to good fencing boundaries being adopted for Messrs Jacques and Lambert, and also that no green bush be destroyed in any .existing watercourse. The land to be weighted with improvements, to be -paid for by incoming lessee if offered to any other person. Rental, £4 per annum. The following applications were submitted for approval :—F. H. T. Flower, J.OO acres in Block 1., Onamalutu S.D., under " The Mining Districts L.U. Act, 1894"; T. Flower, 100 acres m same block —Approved, subject to all necessary cond tions being fulfilled and no serious objection urged after the application has been advertised. Mr J. Boyd, Chairman of the Kaikoura County Council, interviewed tne Board a,nd asked that all the stockresting reserves be vested in the Council.—Recognising the uselessness of the reserves as they at present exist, it was resolved to recommend the Governor to devise some method by which these reserves could be handed over to the Kaikoura County Council, with a view to having them more profitably used.

W. R. O. Wells applied under Sec.-' -tion 115 of "The Land Act, 1892," for unoccupied Crown. lands in Blocks VIII. and XII., Gore S'D. (about 460 acres),—The Minister to be recommended that a lease in perpetuity be granted to Mr Wells, subject to the Warden's consent to.the portion within the goldfield. . J. W. Hughes wrote withdrawing his application for Section 12, Block XL, Wakamarffla S.D., on the grounds that he did not notice at the. time that the land was assessed at~£l per acre, and-applied for a lease in perpetuity of Sections 12 and 13; Block XIII. (reassessed at 10s per acre), and asked to be allowed to pay half-year's rent Instead of survey fee.—Recommended for Minister's approval. R. Me Alpine applied to have the road line boundary of Section 2, Block 11., Gore S.D., carried forward easterly to the boundary^ of the front reserve. —Mr Seymour to report on the application.

Robb requested that Ke be § ranted Section 12, Block 11., Orieri .D., on easier terms, as he was not in sl position to pay the survey fee.;— It was resolved to recommend the Minister to grant the land to him on payment of half-year's rent and lease fee. Mr Harvey applied, per Mr Seymour, to surrender part of S.G. Run 13, and take up other land in place of it.—Deferred for a report. A. T. Clemett, lessee of the Three Bridges Accommodation-house Reserve, applied for a reduction of rent. —The Board declined the request.

The following application for change of tenure was submitted for approval: —B. A. Ward, Pastoral Run No. 145, to L.l.P.—The Warden wrote consenting to a lease in perpetuity being granted.—Application granted, subject to assessment by Ranger. A. E. McMillan applied to forfeit his interest in L.P. Lease No. 378, Section 4, Block XIII.) Linkwater S.D.; also S.G. Run Lease No. 48.—1t was resolved to forfeit the lease, and re-open it for application under L.I.P. tenure; land assessed at 5s per a:cre. The Under-Secretary wrote intimating that no leases under " The Mining Districts Land Occupation Act" can be granted in a State Forest.—Noted. A petition signed by W. A. Russell and 21 other sawmill hands was read, asking that 10-acre sections be laid off on the land recently cut up by Brownlee and Co. to provide homes for the sawmill employees.—A petition was received from D. W. Morrison and others protesting against the land being cut up into 10-acre sections, as this would take all the flat land needed for the other rural sections.—lt was resolved to recommend the Minister to approve of the petition of W." A. Russell and others, and that steps be taken to make an equitable'exchange with Mr Turner of part of Section 39 for the land granted to him by the Minister, viz., Section sa. Mr W. Morrison and others to be notified that there is no intention of cutting up all the flat land, but in the opinion of the Board provision must be made for the sawmill employees. H. J. Stace wrote suggesting the resumption of S.G. Run No. 163 for the preservation of forest and scenery, also native birds, and in the event of this being done that he be granted a lease of all the cleared land, or else be "allowed to purchase same under the squaring-up clause of "The Land Act." —Postponed till next meeting. A. Adair, lessee of Section 4R Rainford Settlement, wrote stating that he understood he was granted exemption from residence, and also stating that he is residing on his own section immediately adjoining.—Postponed for further consideration.

J. O'Connor wrote offering to fence in Recreation Reserve, Lot X, Township of Ward, if he were granted a lease of it for three years, rent free.— Resolved to ask the Flaxbourne Settlers' Association to form a Domain Board to control the reserve.

J. Moran applied for a lease-in-per-petuity of sections 2 and 10 Block 111, Cape Campbell S.D. (Flaxbourne Settlement), which is now held by him on a year-to-year lease.—Mr Moran to be notified that there is no power to grant him a lease-in-perpetui,ty without compensation.

M. Sheehan wrote asking that his ■SEj"sll*l®ll for section 5, Block XIV, Clifford Bay S.D., be re-considered.— *™T fui"ther consideration. A. Thomson asked, permission to cut and sell timber for firewood from the

plantation on section 4, Block VI, Cape Campbell S.D. (Flaxbourne Settlement).—Resolved that permission be granted, subject to the trees to be removed being first marked by the Crown Lands Ranger. A. McLaggan wrote requesting permission to kill goats and wild sheep, for their skins, on fhe Crown lands at the back of Mt. Patriarch.—Permission declined.

J. Blizzard (Town Clerk, Picton) applied to have sections 903 and 922 vested in the Borough Council of Picton, and if this cannot b© done the Council are prepared to purchase the sections required for service reservoir purposes.—Recommended for favourable consideration of Minister. The Pelorus, Wairau, Picton, and Awatere Road Boards submitted their schedules of proposed expenditure of j thirds" and "fourths," which were ] approved. The Picton and Pelorus Road Boards i submitted their schedules of proposed expenditure of royalties accrued under I Tim, bef and Flax Royalties Act, 1905. —Approved. ASSESSMENTS.
