Monday's Birmingham 'demonstrations chiefly recognised Mr Chamberlain's strenuous Parliamentary activity and devotion to national and Imperial ideals.

Mr Chamberlain was the recipient of a great number of congratulatory messages, including one from the Queen, and also telegrams from the Colonies and hundreds from London. The Stock Exchange sent an address. At Bingley Hall in the evening, in the presence of an enthusiastic crowd of 10,000 people, Mr Chamberlain received over 100 addresses of congratulation. He delivered a vigorous speech, reviewing his political life and vindicating his attitude towards the great problems of recent politics, insisting that strengthening the bonds of union of the Empire was the highest object of statesmanship. He was confident that the reforms he advocated would be achieved. Personally he was satisfied at the way in which things were moviiyj;.
