A NEGLECTED BURIAL GROUND.

TO THE EDITOK

Sir, —Many years ago, when the history of Marl'borough dates back to the time when the only church and church yard existing in Marlborough was the old Presbyterian Church at Hen wick, the trustees of the said Church gave permission to those desiring it to inter the remains of their friends in the grounds of the church absolutely free of charge. Many old residents availed themselves of the opportunity afforded by the trustees, and consequently a fairly large plot was filled with graves. When, however; the population increased within the district of Wairau and it became apparent that a public burial ground was required, the trustees withdrew the privilege above mentioned, and the permanent cemetery was established at the Upper Wairau. The old ground was allowed to revert to its wild state, as no one was supposed to keep the place in order. The Church Committee has realised that something should be done in the matter of beautifying the old site, but their funds are quite exhausted with the upkeep of the church building and the work of the circuit. It was resolved, therefore, to invite public subscriptions to defray the cost of putting the old burial ground in decent order, and maintaining same. Several persons have already responded, though as yet no public appeal has been made. The undersigned will be pleased to receive subscriptions, which will be acknowledged in the columns of the "Marlborough Express" when the work is completed. No doubt this appeal will be responded to by some friends of those buried and by the public spirited persons of Marlborough, and ere long the old eyesore will be removed and replaced by a more attractive memory spot. Thanking you, sir, for the space you have so generously afforded me.—l am, etc.,

J. BARY, Sec. Presbyterian Church Com Remvick, May 12, 1906.
