THE FLAXBOURNE ESTATE.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—As one of the Crown Valuers in the recent compensation case, I wish to give an unqualified denial to the statement made in a letter appearin your columns to the effect that the Flaxbourne Estate is overran with rabbits, I may say tbat I was three times over the estate, and inspected it closely on each occasion; and the absence of rabbits was very marked. The scarcity of the pest over such a large area of country is really surprising, as must be admitted by every unprejudiced person who knows the ground. As % matter of fact the propetty is practically free of rabbits. I was on the place for several days from daylight to dark, at two different seasons of the year; and Mr MoKerrow, chairman of the Land Purchase Board, whom I accompanied over the ground, remarked on this feature of Flaxbourne. How Mr Reid, of Oamarn, could arrive at such a statement as he made is a mystery; and it seems to me very unfair and unjust to both the past management and the Grown that he should have published such a report on practically nothing but hearsay evidence.—l am, etc.,
