HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW,

Ewart's Hall presented a gay and animated appearance last night on the occasion of the Chrysanthemum Show. The attendance of the public daring the afternoon and evening was large, and the exhibits of the " Queen of tho Autumn" were the subject of much favorable comment* The exhibition was the best collection of chrysanthemums yet seen in this district, and in the opinion of the judge (Mr Craig, of the Government nursery, Seddon) wonld compare very favorably with exhibitions in any part of the colony. A Wellington exhibitor, Mr F. Wills, an amateur grower, sent a fine collection of blooms, but he says the Blenheim show is about ten days too late for the best of the blooms, and the cold south-east weather had adversely affected the late flowers, A small exhibit of cactus dahlias is also worth mention. Fruit and vegetables were not strong in point of numbers, but were good in quality. The dressed tables were very pretty and effective. This show they were restricted to girls under seventeen years of age. During the evening proceedings were enlivened by the strains of the Orchestral Society band, and a display of physical drill by the High School Cftdets.
