NEW YORK UNDER A FLOOD.

THE RECENT HEAVY RAINS.

[Per s.s. Sierra at Auckland.]

San Fbancisoo, October 27.

Torrential rains on the 11th, 12tb, and 13tb October laid New York City and the surrounding country under a flood. The cellars in Brooklyn and a great portion of the subway were flooded, the suburban steam and trolly lines were crippled, and in the early morning hours thousands of suburban residents were unable to reach their offices in the city. Reports of extensive floods and serious damage to property and the interruption of traffic came" from almost all sections of Jersey and Long Island. In Paterson alone the damage is estimated at two million dollars, without taking account of tho loss in wages to thousands who have been temporarily

deprived of occupation by the shutting down of factories

It is estimated that the flood along the Delaware river will cause the loss of nearly one million dollars. Nine bridges, each built at a cost of from fifty thousand to one hundred thousand dollars were carried away.
