FIRE AT THAMES.

Press Association. Electric Telegraph Copyright.

Thames, July 14. A serious fire broke out last night at the Royal Hotel, a wooden building of about 50 rooms. It is supposed to have started in a defective chimney, and spread to a lumber room above. It had a big hold when discovered and spread with great rapidity, although the Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene with a splendid supply of water. The hotel was completely destroyed. The Brigade prevented the spread of the fire to adjoining buildings.

The house was owned by Mr Owen Humphreys, the lessees being Messrs Campbell and Ehrenfried, and it was occupied by Samuel Howard. The insurances are not ascertainable here, the policies having been effected in Auckland.
