A Blue Book just published shows that Lord George Hamilton concurred in Lord Curzon's recommendation that Britain should bear half of the £786,000 cost of increased pay necessitated under the changed system of enlistment and raising 50,000 instead of 35,000 recruits in India. Mr Brodrick was not willing to burden Britain with the proposed cost. Lord Alverstone, arbitrating in the case, threw the whole charge on the revenue of India.
