MAHUTA SWORN IN AS A LEGISLATIVE COUNCILLOR.

Auckland, May 22.

After an important meeting held in Government House grounds to day at which the Hon. R. J. Seddon, Hon. Jas. Carroll, Mahuta, the Maori King, and bstween two and three hundred Maoris were present, Mahuta was sworn in as a member of the Legislative Council and of the Executive Council.

In the course of his speech Mr Seddon declared that it was a memorable day fraught with great possibilities for the native race.

A small section of the Ngatimaniapoto tribe, who objected to the step being taken, sang a chant, the effect being if Mahuta became a Councillor it meant good-bye to kingship and power, and that he had gone from the Maoris to the Pakehas. The majority of the Maniapoto tribe favored the step taken by King Mahuta.
