An interesting war of words disturbed the sedate sossioo of the Parliamentary Committee on Newspapers, sitting in Sydaey the other week. Mr S. Cooke, the able Manager of tbe Sydney Morning Herald and the Sydney Mai', proved a hard nut to crack. His sharp answers provoked answers equally sharp from the sturdy labor champion, Mr A. H, Griffith, who occupied the chair. Incidentally the Chairman illustrated a smart retort by a witty reference to Dr Williams' pink pills for palo people—tbe famou3 tonic. The reference was not only amusing, but very apt, as can be seen from the dialogue taken from the reports in '.he Sydney dailies. Mr Cook was being examined by Mr Dacey, the popular Member for Botauy, who asked him if he did not consider newspapers a necessity. Mr Cook—" Yes, a newspaper i 3 a necessity of the time." Mr Daoey—" So is food." Mr Cook—" Food is a necessity no doubt, but a newspaper is a necessity just like a Post Office. A newspaper is a necessity of responsible government."
