THE MELBA CONCERT IN SYDNEY.
SYDNEY UNIVERSITY. MET. MANN'S ARRIVAL IN AUSTRALIA. Sydney, September 30. The booking'for the series of concerts to be given here by Madame Melba commenced to-day. The sales represented £1652. A reception to delegates, including representatives of a number of English and foreign Universities, in connection with the jubilee celebrations of Sydney University, was a brilliant function. New Zealand was, represented by Messrs James Hay, A. Hamilton, J. R. Blair, E. B. Cargill, the Rev. V?. -A. Evans, Mesdames Hay and Petrie, and Miss Cargill. Melbourne, September 30. Mr Tom Mann, who has arrived here from New Zealand, was welcomed at the Trades Halli In an interview, Mr Mann said i ** I would not care to express myself very; folly in regard to some phases of life in New Zealand, but, speaking of in dustrial matters,. I should be exceedingly glad to find the same conditions of things existing at Home. If any man at Home were to ask me about the place, I shonldsay you will receive fifteen shillings more weekly for an hoar a day less work. Of that fifteen you will spend half,'because of the higher cost of living. That will leave you with a margin of seven and sixpence and an hour a day less work." ■:'■ Mr Mann spoke in terms of bigh commendation of the New Zealand Arbitration Act. ■■" ■ ■» ■■ '.
