At the Magistrate's Court this morning John Clancy was charged with breaking into the house of Jobn Haigh, and stealing a gold watch and gold ring, together valued at £6, on the 18th May, 1902. Accused reservedhis defence, and was committed for trial.
Napier, October 1.
At the meeting of" the Borough Council to night it was decided to submit to a poll of the ratepayers a proposal for a loan of £5000 to enable certain necessary public works to be carried but.
The Council also decided to place in the Council Chambers, as a memorial, a tablet containing the names of all the Hawkes Bay troopers who had taken part in the South African war. Gisborne, October 1.
Gisborne Customs returns for last month show a record for the port— £1768.
A coincidence of the vital statistics for the past month is that thirteen births and a like number of deaths and marriages were registered. A stir was caused at the Hon. J. Carroll's house shortly before one o'clock this morning. A sailor en cumbered with a heavy swag; and having a wild appearance, wandered to the house. After strolling over the roof and swinging himself down the side of the house by the spouting, he came round to the front door and stated his intention of remaining. He made a great clatter on the house top. He was arrested and remanded for enquiries. He is a Finn named Alex. Peterson, and had been drinking. Wellington, October 1.
Mr Alfred Hill, the well-known musician, who has returned to New Zealand from Australia in order to settle at Wellington, was at st meeting of citizens presented by the Mayor with a purse of sovereigns.
