LOWER WAIRAU RIVER BOARD.

* — The monthly meeting of the above Board was held last night. Present Messrs Scott (Chairman), Meehan, Can*, and Adams. RIVER BANKING. The Board, which visited the locality the other day, discussed the question of putting a culvert in, and banking, Milt Creek, for thtf protection of the l^brth Ward. It was agreed that such work should be carried out. Mr Meeban thought that the bank s, on the northern side of the Omaka, which now ended abruptly at Vercoe's brick kiln, should be run out to a dead level. I , Mr Carr was quite agreeable to the Mill Creek scheme being carried out to the full extent, but on the condition that the bank on the southern side of the river (along Ward Street) be made up to. the same height as that on the other side* or that the difference be no more than one foot, the Ward Street banking to be asphalted. The banking; on the town side was two feet lower f and if the Mill Creek project were carried out the flood water would be forced against the southern bankings which should therefore be strengthened. It was agreed that the Board might well approach the Borough Council again with regard to Ward Street. Mr Adams thought that in all probability if flood water went over Ward Street the whole of the Board's bank- • ing would be of little avail. • Mr Meehan said a difficulty was that the raising of Ward Street batik would mean the widening but of it at the base, and would be an expensive work. Another "point was that whereas there was an escape of fljod water on this side in the event of an overflow there was no outlet on the other side.

The Chairman remarked that these matters', were hardly before the Board at the present moment. The immediate question was as to the 'drawing up of a pian for the Mill Creek work. It'was resolved that the Inspector be instructed to prepare a plan and estimate for a culvert for Mill Creek and obtain the assistance of a draughtsman if necessary.

GENERAL.

The Chairman referred to a; letter which, appeared in the press daring the week patting a number of queries with regard" to the granting of £50 to the Reawiok settlers for certain work to be done at Gibson's Creek.—The resolution ot the August meeting was referred to and was found to be as fol lows.: "That the Renwick settlers be oflered the sum of £50 for the protection of Gibson's Creek, provided that the work is done to the satisfaction of the Board."

The Chairman said that this ought to be a sufficient answer to the letter in the newspaper. The Inspector reported that Dod son's culvert had been finished, and, with good weather, the banking would be finished this week. On the motion, of Mr Meehan, seconded by Mr Adams, the salary of the Inspector was increased from 9a to lOs-'-a day. Complimentary reference was made by all the members to the work done by Mr Greig, and satisfaction was expressed with the result of bis appointment as working Inspector. Aceoonts were passed far payment. t A legal opinion was received from Mr McCallum with reference to the grazing of. stock in the Gpawa Relief Channel. —. The Inspector was <in stracted to impound all stock found in the Channel, and to obtain the Borough IffipoundT's assistance when required. The following tenders were received for the construction of the Burleigh banking:—Maher and Brpughan (accepted) £47, E. Leake £58 9s. Mr Jas Holdaway wrote drawing attention to an erosion at his place a few chains below the railway bridge.—-The Inspector was instructed to attend to the matter. .
