Melbourne, September 28. . The Premier (Hon. W. H. Irvine) states that the Victorian 'finances are -' in a serious conditiou. ■■-.-.,
The deficit for the present year is now estimated at £700,000.
Sir A. S. Peacock, Leader of the Opposition, has been seized with ill ness, and it is believed that lung trouble has suddenly developed. He has been forbidden to leave his room till after the elections.

It is now stated that Sir A. J. Peacock (the late Premier) is not seriously ill, -and he is participating in the eleo« tion campaign.
