ESTABLISHED 1866. The Marlborough Express PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1902. KRUGER AND HIS MEMOIRS.
-+- "Oom Paul" is publishing his autobiography, and it is stated that the £30,000 he is being paid (naturally by a German) for the copyright will be devoted entirely to the aid of the Boers. This is quite right, for upon no man lies such a heavy share of responsibility for the late war as upon this ignorant and fatuously obstinate old man. With the many evidences of his past mendacity that we have had during the last two years, we may look forward to a narrative which will reek with impudent misrepresentations, and no doubt when the old man himself is at a loss to invent more lies about the British nation and British statesmen the master-hand of "Dr Lies" will be found adding afew extra "tarradiddles" to the long list of falsehoods that baffled intriguer and plotter has already piled up in the service of the deposed President. The book may be regarded as the last effurt of Kruger to mislead public opinion on the Continent, but it can effect little harm, for already the whole gamut of falsehood has been exhausted by Dr Leyds and the Boer " peace missioners," and it matters little to England what is believed or said about her by the European nations. The British Government has a most difficult task to perform in South Africa, a task which it may take many years to carry to a successful achievement; but, undeterred by foreign sneers and abuse, Great Britain will steadily pursue her policy of mercy and justice, and posterity will be her fairest judge. Meanwhile we trust that Mr Chamberlain will steadfastly refuse to allow Kruger to return to South Africa, for his presence at Pretoria would certainly be most mischievous in its indirect influence. Let him write his book, and pocket his £30,000, returning as much as he pleases thereof to his " poor burghers," but since the Dutch have taken him so much to their hearts, let them keep him.
