I THE WAIRA.U REGATTA.

Committee, Officers and Committee of Blenheim Rowing Club; Hon. Beori* tary, W. J. Morrish. A labge number of people attended the regatta yesterday held on the Wairau River at Spring Creek. The two trains from town well filled with excursionists, and a great many people journeyed from Pieton and the Spring Creek district to witness the sport. The weather was exceptionally favorable for an outing, and the locality was especially suited to pionfo parties, the willowa lining the hanks of the river affording grateful shade, and the Wairau bridge and its approaohes making an excellent stand wherefrom to view the races. The various events were well contested, the Pieton Rowing Club bearing off the lion's share of the honors. All the races were got off punctually to time, the officials donneoted with the carrying out of the programme working assiduously. Mr P. Redwood very generously gave tha committee the use of his steam launch to start and follow the races. Following are the results :— [Maiden Fours, 1 mile.— First prize, £6 10s ; second prize, £1. Pioton Rowing Olub.— o. Perano (stroke), H. Hilton (3), J. Nash (2), A. Galbraith (bow), Stow (cox) 1 Blenheim Rowing Olub. — J. Jaokeon (stroke), E. Logan (3), J. Clarke (2), W. Morrißh (bow), L. Grace (cox) ... „. 2 Pioton got the best start and maintained their lead throughout the race, winning by two lengths. Senior Pairs. The Pieton pair, 0. Fredericks (stroke) ** A. Smith (bow), rowed over. Junior Fours, 1£ miles.— Firat prize, £8 ; second prize, £1. Star Boating Club— Bendall stroke, Fanning 3, Maudesley 2, Bendall bow, Weaton cox ... 1 Pieton " B " drew— Perano stroke, Hilton 3, Nash 2, Galbraith bow, Whiting cox ... ».. 2 Blenheim Rowing Club— J, Jackson stroke, R. Logan 3, Clarke 2, Morr!sh bow, L. Grace cox 3 Also started— Plcton "A." Crew: S. Fell stroke, C. Peek 2, A. Fell 8, J. Price bow, Stow cox. A good start was effected, and the crews kept well together until the mile post was reached, when the Stars drew away, Pieton " B"crew be« ing close up. The Stars gradually increased their lead, winning by about two lengths. Blenheim third about a length and a-half behind Pieton "B" crew. Pieton "A " crew gave up. Senior Fours, 2 miles. First prize £10, second £1 10s. Pieton Bowing Club.— Fredericks (stroke), A. Smith (3), MoCorraiok (2). G. Smith (bow), Stow (cox) .. ... ... 1 Pioton Bowing Club. —S. Fell (stroke), 0. Peek (3), A. Fell (2), J. Price (bow), .„ ... 2 The champions pulled home comfortably, the junior crew, who were also entered m the race, not pressing them. Senior Double Sculls. The Pictoa crew, 0. Fredericks stroke, McOormick bow, were the only entrants, and rowed over. Junior Pairs, 1 mile. First prize £2, seoond 10s. Pieton Bowing Olub " B " crew.— J. Nash stroke, Galbraith bow ... 1 Star Boating Club.— Maudsley stroke Fanning bow, ... ... 2 Other starters were : Pioton " A " crew : S. Fell stroke. C. Peek bow, and Blenheim Bowing Olub, B. Stevens stroke, A. King bow. The Pioton crew rowing well gained the lead and won by about a length from the Stars who rowed a good raoe. Junior Double Sculls, one mile ; firat prize £2, seoond 10s. Star Boating Club. — Bendali (str.) Bendall (bow) „, .„ 1 Blenheim Bowing Club. — A.. J. Machine (str.), J. M, Jaokson (bow) ... 2 Pieton Bowiug Club.— A. Fell (str.) 0. Perano (bow) also started. This was the best race of the day. All the crews were together until half way home, when Pieton were outpaced and gave up. A great race enßued batween the Btara and Blenheim, but the former were not to be denied. Various aquatic sports amused the spectators. The greasy pole was won by Hebberley out of seven contestants. The Maori canoe race was keenly contested by the two canoes entered and excited much interest.
