■ ♦ The members of the Oinaka Road Board accorded a hearty vote of tba'nbs to Mr Charles Re J wood yesterday on the occasion of bis resignation from the Board after a membership of several years. The Selection Committee of the Choral Society has decided tbat the next opera to be produced will be " The Sorcerer." The piece was tbe first of Gilbert and Sullivan's efforts. The music ia sparkling and the libretto is full of fun, It ia expected that tbe opera will be m active rehearsal m about a month's time. New members sfibuld join tbe Society at once. We acknowledge the receipt of tbe Newspaper Press Directory for 1897, issued by Messrs C. Mitchell & Co , London. This bock, which is the 52nd annual volume, is a demy quarter of over 500 pages. Tbe compilation is excellent iv every respect. In addition to the very complete information regarding the British Press, there are several special articles of real value, such as "Imperial Federation," '' Transvaal Newspaper Law," and " Fcreign Competition. " The Wairau Froiz'ng Company, which met yesterday, are gratified at the success tbat has attended the establishment of tbe Works at Spring Creek. The results so far are very encouraging. Tbe 88, Mamari is expected m Picton next week, when probably as many as from 10,000 to 12,000 carcases will be m readiness for shipment. Tbe chairman of directors is proceeding to Wellington to make arrangements m this direction. One fact worthy of vote is that tbe operations of ibe company have induced the authorities to provide mooring piles m tbe Picton harbor. This will be a great convenience, and tbe company will now be able to deal wuh the loading of general cargoe as well as carcases. The Education Board haa ever baen a •'happy family." In thanking the members for their courtety to the chair Mr Sejmour said that durng the 2C ye^rs bo bad occupied that posi'ion be bad never had occasion to call a a 1 ember to order. This amity of intercourse might well be emulated by other local bodies.
