♦ The Wellington people who are engaged m working up the Exhibition, which will be held m the capital city next summer, deserve every credit for the energetic way m which they are setting about the necessary arrangements. Financing such enterprises as industrial exhibitions is not always so easy as it looks, but the Exhibition Committee m Wellington are evidently the right men m the • right place, and already a sum of £2500 has been guaranteed to supS port an overdraft of the same amount, which is to be expended m the construction and fitting up of the buildings which it has been decided to erect. The fact that the list of guarantors includes the names Of some of the most influential and reputedly smartest of the Wellington business men speaks well for the prospects of success. The Government are giving assistance, not only m the shape of a grant m aid, but by utilising the services of officials of various public depart- - ments all over the colony m the direction of securing exhibits. As far as is possible with the economy which is very properly to be exercised , the exhibition building will present a handsome appearance, and as it has been very wisely decided to make the alley-ways between the exhibits much wider than has usually been the case m exhibitions held m New Zealand, the public will be able to ' circulate through the building with much increased comfort and convenience. From what we learn the exhibition will not be confined tomanufactured articles only, but an attempt will be made to make it fully representative of the mining, agricul- , tural and other industries. This being the case the exhibition, besides proving an attraction to visitors from the other colonies, will also have an educative effect upon the people of Wellington and the various districts m the North Island from which the capital is readily and cheaply accessible by rail. We have no doubt that excursions from Picton and . Blenheim will be run at cheap fares, and that being the case we feel sure * that Marlborough will furnish a ! goodly quota of visitors to the big show which is now being initiated by our Wellington friends. j , Thib is how Le Petit Journal ecubbilods of Paris, which has a oiroui tone against lation of a million oopies a England, day, speaks of England: " England, selfish and per- . fidious, with a view to her personal interests, , unceasitfgly sows discord among the peoples of the Continent, whose union she fears; she eupplies them daily with new causes for quarrels m order to divert their attention , from her own vile deeds {touches agimments). For she knows well that the union of Europe would be tbe signal for her ruin ; she has only too many means to prevent it. , Suppress causes of hatred, calm wounds, unite hostile peopleß m face of tbe common danger, and England is lost ! She knows , it well, and it is a continual subjeot of terror for her." Le Petit Journal, wbioh puts the foregoing m its largest type and on its front page, may not oiroulate much among the eduoated olasses m France, but it circulates enormously among tbe lower middle and the working olasses. The " journal of the concierge," as they call it m Paris, is the only daily newspaper which reaches many Frenoh village?. It per--1 Bistently adopts this sourrilous tone against England, and by constantly pegging away . seems likely to attain its amiable purpose of creating an Anglophobe lower class m Franoe.
