MERIT SHOULD BE RECOGNISED—CHAMPION CLUB SWINGING.

TO THB EDITOB. Sir, — A few weeks since, when our fellow-townsman left home to break the world's record at club swinging, we were all very anxious to hear of his success, and our excitement grew intense as the welcome news spread that our man was" still going strong." When the feat was accomplished we were justly proud of his excellent performance, and speculation ran high as to what the world would say and do by the plucky performer. What the ultimate result will be 'tis yet too early even to speculate on, but what the immediate result should be must be apparent to all true lovers of sport. Mr Bax has been long and favourably known and connected with all kinds of sports in the district, and has gained distinction for the town on several occasions, notably in connection with rowing ; but now that he has returned with such a glorious success as the accomplishment of the greatest feat of endurance on record, surely we are not going too far in endeavouring to show him in a practical way that wo are proud of his success. Indeed I feel sure that a subscription towards a purse of sovereigns would be readily responded to, for all true Britishers are agreed that merit should be rewarded. Feeling sure that the above will meet the views of the majority, and thanking you in anticipation for youv valuable space. — I am, etc., Athlete.
