— » FIXIOBXS. August 22 — North Canterbury Hunt Steepleohaae Club. September 7— Otago Hunt Club. NOTES BY THUNDERBOLT. It is with great pleasure that I have to record the victory of Mutiny m the Grand National Steepleohase, for I suppose there is not a more honest or game little horse m New Zealand than this son of The Mute and Lady Maxwell. I must candidly own I did not think him equal to the task, considering the way the weather interfered with his training, but won he has, and from the account to hand easily at that. An old Blenheim horse managed to score at last, viz., Marechal Neil, truly a most unlucky horse who must have cost his connections a mint of money. To-day the Grand National Hurdle Race is run, which will be robbed of a deal of interest by the sudden death of Kahaurangi, who fell dead on Tuesday last while executing a gallop with Rags and Variety. Kahaurangi was by Somnus — The Germ by Painter — Fides, and if I remember rightly was bred by Mr Higgie of Wanganui. His chance m the above event was considered second to none by his connections, and Mr Scott will receive the sympathy of all the racing community m his bad luck, and great will be the regret that the black and amber jacket is not to be unfurled at Riccarton to-day. The first payment for the New Zealand Cup must be considered very good, Lottie, Pounama and Osculator are the only noticeable absentees. A rumor is current that all is not well with Mahaki. -^ Royal Rose is receiving support for the cup, should he reach the post fit he will be a very dangerous horse. North Atlantic is said to be m fine condition for this time of year. The weights for the Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps have appeared and the following weights have been allotted New Zealand owned horses. Epsom Handicap, St Hippo 9.12, Royal Rose 8.3, Doris 7.7, Musketry 7.5, Manser 6.10. Metropolitan St. Hippo 9.9, Royal Rose 8. Manlicher. 7.5, Osculator 7. Rob Roy, who was considered the best two-year-old m Australia is set to give Manlicher Slbs m the mile and half race. Should Doris be strung up with 7.7 she should make things very warm m the Epsom Handioap of a mile.
