At a meeting of the Oanterbnry Women's Institute the following resolutions were passed :- " That this Institute is in favor of the abolition of capital punishment: (I) as the Sta'e has no right to commit murder; (2) as it has not proved* a deterrent, and that, therefore, the Minister of Justice be petitioned in the Dean case, in which sentence o_ death has been passed, that the sentence be commuted to imprisonment for life." "That this Institute earnestly desires to draw the attention of the Auckland Women's Political League to the following reasons why liia Contagious Diseases Acta should be repealed : (1) Because they are ' ' glaring violation of constitutional law ; (2) Beoause they are "an insult to the women of the colonv ; (3) Because they are useless in checking spread of disease ; (4) Because thty actually help to spread disease by oreating a false sense of security ; (5) Because it is immoral for the State to legalise vice; (6) Because physical good cannot follow moral wrong."
