A DUTCH IDEA OF GOD.
[thtjth.] Thb Gape Legislature has lately beao considering the question of legislation far dealing with the depredations of founts. A Cape newspapwr gma the following account oi a dabato which oomeqasntly took place at a^iocal mettiDg of " the Bond" :— Mr 8. Groblar said he b&d heard about the making of & loonit law, and »poke m solemn tarma of tha Godlewnesß of each a plan. Mr L Greeff said that if thej would make a law to destroy locals, tb«y most take into account whioh King is tho Baler. _ Mr C. Behe«p«rs spoke m the same spirit, Wharanpon the following motion was proposed by 0. Seheepers, and wconded by L Greeff—" Seeing loeosis are ft pi gue which cannot be looked upon otherwise than as punishment *aut us from aboTe, this meeting moßt strongly condemns the proelamauon of a law for the eradication of the said plagne." The xaotion was carried. -There are some conditions of human muddls-headedneßS whioh it i* totally imposaibls for those net similarly afflicted to grapple with. What are Messrs Urobler, Greeff, Scheapers, and Co like, I wonder, m their daiiy ihrea? How do they manage ths •very-iay business of exi»tence? Thej encounter, I suppose other plagues m this life besides locusts. X imagine that there are rats and mice m that country, snails and caterpillars, posßibly bugs and fleas. Are these creatures all encouraged to thrive, last by destroying them the d«sign» of Providence ahculd bs frustrated ? Do worthy Dutchmen refuse, for tha esme reassn, to take measures to withstand the ravages of pestilcnoa and famine ? Would they object, now, to the erection of a dam to avert a flood, or of a lighfcttiDg-eoriduetor aa a defence against thunder-storms ? They must be a very singular people, and I should like to know more of them— at a distance.
