SIR H. PARKBS DEFEATED. ; [UNITED PBEBS ASSOCIATION.] ' Received October 16, 12.20 p.m. Sidney, Ootober 16. On the motion for the third wading of the Goal Mines Bill, which legalises tho eight hours limit to labour, Mr McMillan, formerly Treasurer m the present Ministry, moved its recommittal, opposing the legislation of the eight hours system for one class of the community and not for another. Sir H. Parkes disclaimed responsibility for the insertion clause, which the Minister of Mines had assented to while be was absent from the House through illness. He opposed fixing the hour 3 of labor. Legislation on the subject was not wanted as the working man was sufficiently, powerful to make good his will m the matter without the aid of Parliament. He would retire from omcS^ther than assent to the clause. Mr Barton moved the adjournment of the debate. . The Premier asserted if the motion was not carried the Government would not proceed with the bill. They would not submit to refusal to adjourn. Eventually the adjournment was negatived by 49 to 41. Sir H. Parkes said that m view of his previoas statement he had no alternative but to ask the House to adjourn, which was carried amidst considerable excitement.
