Peopebty Sale. — We are informed on reliable authority that Mr S. J. Macalister who has for some time past been engaged m farming operations m the Sound has sold out his property there, and it ia more than probable that m the course of a few weeks he will resume the business he was previously engaged m m this town. Those who have been accustomed to transact business with Mr Macalister will doubtless welcome his return.

Death of an old Resident. — An old resident, m the person of Mrs James Hornby, died rather suddenly at her residence m Charles-street this "morning, of Bright's disease. The deceased, who was 69 years of age, was a member of '.he Church of England, and came out m the ship Donna Annita to Nelson about 26 years ago, and almost immediately settled m the Wairau. There are six children m the family, one son being settled m America, and the others are living m the province. The deceased lady was greatly respected by all who knew her, she bore a reputation for industry, and until lately had supported herself, although m poor circumstances. The funeral will take place at one o'clock on Friday.

Church News. — Last Sunday at the Roman Catholic Church a very large congregation listened attentively to the sermons of the Rev. Father Ginaty, of the Mount Magdala Asylum. The first mass started at half past seven m the morning, and about 40 girlsfall dressed m white received Holy Communion, the boys with white sashes, also attended to their duties. They also attended vespers and made a renewal of their baptismal vows. The Rev. Father Ginaty preached a very impressive sermon, and made us understand what the vows mean, many people being present. I hope that the sympathy of the Blenheim people will be with the Rev. Father m the good work he undertook when he founded the Mount Magdala Asylum. I think that we should be thankful at having the good Sisters m our midst for the appearance of the children yesterday speaks volumes m their favour. The time they spend on them is repaid by the love they have for the Sisters. — Correspondent.

Lectube on Burns. — There was a good audience at the lecture on Burns, given by Mr Thomas Watson m Ewart's Hall last night. The lecturer was m good form, and .gave an interesting and able account of Burns' life, and his experiences at various stages of his career. The lecture was interspersed with selections from some of the poet's best known poems, and.the Choral Society, assisted by the Orchestral Society rendered some of the songs which have made Burns so famous. We must say, however, that the vocalists should have put much more fire into " Scots Wha Hae," and that the winding up of a second Scotch entertainment without " Auld Lang Syne" was bad form. Mr J. M. Hutcheson made an excellent Chairman, and at the conclusion of the lecture a vote of thanks was accorded to him, to the lecturer,: and those who had assisted, on the motion of Mr H. Dodson, seconded by Mr R. McCallum.

Bankruptcy.— The first meeting of creditors m the estate of William Reader, called for yesterday, lapsed for want of a quorum. His statement of liabilities and assets shows unsecured creditors £210 4s; assets, horse, trap and harness £20, book debts £50, furniture £20, total £90, deficiency £120 4s. The creditors are:— Wellington— T. Young £30 11s 6d, Zohrab and Co. £22 12s 6d ; Blenheim -F. W. Dodson £30, Girling and Co. £7 10s, Clouston and Co. £12 123 ; Havelock, W. Price £3 10s, Brownlee and Co. £25, A. Maule £4 17s, D. Pugh (wages) £32 ; Kaituna, H. A. Reader £25 ; Waikakaho, A. W. Dillon £16 10s. On oath the bankrupt said he had been licensee of the Masonic Hotel, Havelock, from May Ist, 1887 and had met his engagements until April this year when trade became dull. During the time he had held the license he had paid £150 off the furniture, which had been valued at £400 when he took the place, but which when he left was valued only at £267. When he found the business was not paying he quitted the hotel, and fully expected that the realisation of the furniture would have enabled him to meet all his liabilities, His creditors nearly all informed him they were willing to wait, but on being pressed by a Wellington oreditor he wasooropelled to file.
