LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.

Correspondence. — Several letters from correspondents appear on the fourth page. Te Aeoha. Election. — Sir Walter Buller is stated to be actively canvassing the Te Aroha district. Political.— Mr Baick, M.H.R., will visit th 6 Kaikoura portion of his constituency next week, to ascertain what the local requirements may be.

Naturalisation. — In tho last Gazette, notice is given tbat letters of naturalisation have been granted to Angelo Brunetti, laborer, Tua Marina. A Transfer. — It ig raportad that Mr Turnbull, E.M., at Nelson, is to be transferred to Hawkes' Bay, to whioh the Napier papers object, as Mr Turnbull knows nothing of Native matters. School Committee Election. — The householders' meeting held last night passed off smoothly, and the effect of the day's voting can be seen when we state that there was at no time more than 30 voters present m the room. Ministerial. — We are given to understand that the Hon Mr McKcnzie will visit Marlborough as soon as possible after the sitting of Parliament. His object, we presume, is to sea what can be done m the matter of extended settlement m this district. The Maori's Cargo. — The cargo sent away by the Maori, as shown on Mr Clouston's books, is as follows: — 8011 carcases of mutton, 954 rabbits, 14 turkeys, 18 ducks, and G fowls. The boat took no general cargo from M&rlborough. Thb Bisnop Suter Testimonial. — A meeting of all who desiro to aid m carrying out tho proposed testimonial to Bshop Suter, whether Churchmen on not, are m vifced to attend a meating to be held m the Churoh of England Sunday schoolroom this evening at 7.30. [Resignation. — Mr W. B. Parker will, we understand, resign from the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, at its meetiog on Tuesday next, m consequence of certain strictures that have been made with respect to his action m accepting tenders for the year's supplies. Housing Station Hands.— The Po3t nays that m order that a return asked for by Mr Buick m the last session may be prepared, mounted police constabie3 are now engaged making enquiries as to the accomodation provided for laborers and station hands engaged at sheep stations. Hunt Club.— Members of the Hunt Club are reminded of the meeting of members this evening at Draper's Hotel at 7.30 p.m., when the question of postponing the laces from the Queen's Birthday until later m the season wiil bs considered and decided. It is hoped that there will be a good attendance so that the matter may be fully discussed. The Theatre. — To-night, at Ewart's Hall, the Dobson-Kennedy Company present a most attractive programme. " Current Cash " is admittedly one of the most popular melodramas of the day, brimming over with fun and pathos, Several fulsome scenes have been excised since the company last produced this sterling play here, thus enabling them to-night to perform the charming comedietta, " The Happy Pair,' : m which Miss Idrene Thornton and Mr W. H. Cowan will perform the leading parts. A BotrND Robin. — A petition m favour of the retention of the services of Mr J. J. W. White, which has been largely signed, was yesterday presented by Mr Hanna to Mr T. L. Buick M.H.R., to be forwarded to the Government, which Mr Buick promised to attend to without delay. At the same time very little hope is held out that anything can be done either- m that way, or m the direction of securing for Mr White recognition of his Provincial Government service as well as that under the general Government. This would mean compensation for 31 years service m place of 14^ since the abolition of provinces, «vhich of course is a big item to a retrenched servant. Haste and Repentance. — The Dunedin Globe relates the following : — A young lady who had been engaged to a prosperous young manufacturer, was informed a few days before the marriage was fixed that the firm was insolvent. Not a moment was to be lost, and a letter was written and posted, breaking the engagement ; when within two hours it was discovered that the report was entirely unfounded. The daughter with her parents rushed to the post office, and no words can describe the seene — the appeals, the tears, the wringing of hands, the united entreaties of the family to have the fatal letter restored. But alas ! all was m vain — the rule admitted of no exception. The, ; Duchess of Manchester — The Duchess of Manchester by marrying, writes .a London correspondent, forfeits the income left her under the will of her late husband. But, as Lord Hartington has enough for two, this will not matter very much. Another question arising out of the marriage is that of style and title. Her Grace will not descend a step m. tho peerage and become Marchioness of Hartington. I do not know that there is anything legally to hinder her doing so if she chose. But I understand that she will follow the usual custom, and retain her title of Duchess of Manchester, even after she has become " Marchioness of Hartington." Of course, this will not last. At a period which cannot be very long removed the Duchess of Manchester will become Duchess of Devonshirs. Her Grace will thu3 attain the matrimonial felicity of at least one of our historical beauties, who was married to two dukes m succession. An Old Salt's Yahn. — Onpiun Fairchild is generally good at a yarn. In his buffetings round the coast for the last quarter of a century he has met all sorts and conditions of man. It appears that he recently met one of the laziest men m the Civil Servico whom it had been h's lot to encounter. Tho man was bad with the ague, and " was too lazy to shake. " It is needless to say that the official is, if rumor proves true, to be re'renchecl.
