A second sculling match over the championship course between Stephenson and Dutch resulted, as did the first one, m a victory for the champion of New Zealand, who finished m the fast time of 19mins 58§secs. A company is being floatedin London to export frozen meat from the northern districts, with Newcastle as the port of shipment. The Premier has received information from Lord Knutsford, Secretary of State for the Colonial Department, respecting the French Commission to New Caledonia. The Commission will deal only with naval and civil administration, having no reference whatever to any change. in system of policy, or execution of any special scheme for development of French interests m the Archipelago. The sensation caused by the appointment of a Commission is attributable to exaggeration and misstatements of the . press, as according to French official information only twenty-five, and not sixty convicts escaped from New Caledonia, and of these 20 were re-captured. Brisbane, January 3. An epidemic of scarlet fever is raging m the City. Nine cases of sunstroke have occurred at Rockhampton since Tuesday, and m four instances the attack proved fatal. During the last few days the temperature has been ranging from 103 to 105 m the shade. Hobabt, January 3. The total revenue for the colony for the past year amounts to £753,000, as against £678,800 for 1889. The increase is largely due to the silver boom. The amount of revenue estimated by the Colonial Treasurer as likely to be received has been realised. Newcastle, January 3. The city has been lighted by electricity, the installation being the third largest m the world. ___
