PARTICULARS OF THE DERBY. [united press association.] London, June 4. A capital start was effected for the Derby. Rathbeal was first away, but J Orwell and Kirkliam quickly appeared m front, and led for a quarter of a mile. Kirkhaui assumed the sole command for a furlong further. Orwell m the meantime headed Sainfoin, and Golden Gate came up next. When a mile had been covered Kirkham had dropped back fifth after his brief spurt, and at the top of the hill Sainfoin took up the running, Kirkhara last. At the distance Surefoot was beaten. Le Nord made a desperate rush, ■ but Sainfoin stalled it off and came m ; first by three-quarters of a length, i Orwell was a neck behind Le Nord and a i head m front of Surefoot. Kirkhara is i not likely to start for the Grand Prix. ] The Derby time was 2min 49^sec. i London, June 5. ' The pace m the Derby for the first i three quarters of a mile was wretchedly < slow.
