■ — ♦ : — -' The usual meeting was held last evening ; present the Mayor, Crs McArtney, Parker, Ching, and Cook. - COBBESPONDENCE. ' From the Minister of Lands stating that the strip of land near the railway m Grove Road for which Mr Powiok had applied, was convened by Mr James, Sinclair (29th March, 1876) to the Superintendent as a public reserve, and that it was never promised to the Borough. The Railway Commissioners are willing to grant a right of way to the Council 25ft wide, at a peppercorn rental. It was resolved to ask the Government to compensate the Council for land taken for purposes of the Picton-Blenheim line, on the motion of Cr McArtney seconded by Cr Ching. The Christchuroh City Council again urged the repeal of the Municipal Corporation Act re city gas works, and asking that the member for the district be wired ■ to support the measure. Agreed to. Mr J. Meighan wrote respecting the state of the road at Dillon's point from Nelson bridge. The Inspector was ordered to report. Councillors held that the state of the road was disgracefnl. The Hastings Borough Council wrote enquiring as to the purchase of a steam fire engine, 'which they understood the Council had for sale. It was decided to reply that the Hastings Council were misinformed as to any intention on the part of this Council to sell their engine the Fire Queen. The Inspector was instructed, on the suggestion of Cr Parker, to see to some dangerous and unrepaired places m Fell and Herbert Streets, and after passing accounts the- Council adjourned.
