LAWYER AND PRISONER.
[UNITED PBEBS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, July 19. A petition m favor of the reprieve o Louis Chemis is being numerously signed. The prime movers have written to the Minister of Justice to name the date when it can be handed m; also if he will allow a deputation to present it to His Excellency direct. Last evening Mr Jellicoe visited the Terrace Gaol and held a lengthened conversation with the prisoner but the utterances of each were taken down m shorthand on behalf of the Government by Mr H. Gore, private seoretary to the Minister of Lands. The gaoler (Mr Garvey) was present during the interview. A copy of the transcription has been sent to Mr Jellicoe, who is engaged m looking up evidence on behalf of the prisoner. Mr Jellicoe has written a warm letter to the i Minister of Justice protesting against the • course adopted by the Government, a shorthand reporter being present at the interview, and asking for a private interview ' with the prisoner. : The Government have not taken Chemis case into consideration, as they are waiting for the Judge's formal report t and the evidence which Mr Jellicoe is said to be preparing.
