COKE.

: ♦ ' . • . To the Editor. ' .-. Sib,— ln" reading your report of the Counoil Meeting on Friday night last, I fancy our letter about coke has got hashed up somehow. It certainly reads different to what it was written. What I wanted the Council to understand was that I objected to pay Is 6d per bag or 30s per ton, when I can land coke from Wellington for 26s 6d. Yon will see it makes a' big difference to anyone that is using 1000 bags per year. In Wellington or Nelson they can make gas pay well at 8s per 1000, and can afford to sell the coke at 15s per ton or 9d per bag. In Blenheim (expenses may be higher), where the Gas Works when bought was to be a blessing to the ratepayers, gas is 12s Cd, and they want to give us more agony by charging only 30s psr ton or Is Gd per bag for the Coke. Now Mr Editor, I think you, arid all consumers of gas coke will agree with uie that 30s is a long way too stiff. Let us hope that the excited state of the coke market will not last long. — I am, &c. James Scott. [We reproduced your letter, literatim et verbatim.— -Ed. M.E.]
