RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

» ■ PicioN, Wednesday, July 4.

(Before Mr J. Allen R.M.) UNBEGISTEBED DOGS. A man was fined 5s and costs 14s, for being m possession of an unregistered dog. He had two other dogs which he said did not belong to him, and as there was some doubt about the matter the Magistrate inflicted a fine as above, cautioning the man that if the other two really did belong to him he had better register them. It transpired afterwards that immediately on leaving the Court the defendant proceeded to register the pair. DISTURBING A MEETING. J. D. T. Creech was charged with disturbing a public meeting at Picton on 28th ult. He pleaded guilty. His Worship decided to hear the evidence. It appeared that on the evening m question there was a magic lantern entertainment m the schoolroom, on the occasion of the midwinter break-up of the school, and the room was full, the audience being almost entirely composed of females and children. Defendant, who was apparently under the influence of drink, came to the door and insisted on going m without paying. The door keeper, a lad of 14, refused to place him on the free list, and on his pushing his way m, seized him round the waist and endeavoured to ''hold him back. The scuffle disturbed the meeting and the one or two men present went to the intruder and requested him to withdraw. Thereupon he took his coat off and offered to fight the lot of them, and was with considerable difficulty ejected. A. semi-panic then set m among the audience, which might have been attended with serious consequences. • Outside, the fellow became noisy and abusive, and m consequence a further information was laid, charging him with disorderly conduct m a public place. The Magistrate found no redeeming feature m the case, and characterised the conduct of the defendant as disgraceful m the extreme. He allowed the latter information (arising as it did out of the former case) to be withdrawn, and inflicted for the disturbance the full penalty, viz. £5, and costs 265, m default 14 Jays imprisonment, although defendant pleaded to be let ofi on the somewhat jeonliar ground that "he had'nt done mything for a long time past."

Blenheim, Thuusday, July o. (Before Mr J. Allen, R.M.) BECSKEJJNESS. Phillip Yates, for being drunk, was mcd 5s and 2s costs, and ordered to pay ab hire Bs, and medical fee 7s Gd.
