It was first discovered at i d.15 when Bobbins and Pierard's large c ironmongery and'grocery store was found t to be m flames. Within half an hour the fi fire had spread to the handsome drapery n establishment of Sutton's which was en- I f< tirely consumed. Within half an hour the i adjoining fruiterer's shop belonging to a Donnelly was also destroyed. This was p the finest block m Hawera. Sutton's p buildings cost over £1,500 to erect about ai five years ago, and were insured m the name of. Archibald Clark and son, Auckland, it is said for £1000, but this is not certain. Sutton's stock, much of it just to hand, was insured for £1000, and was valued at £3000. Bobbins and Pierard's building is said to be insured for £500 ; and so far as the insurances are fii known, the Phoenix has £400 on the iron- ca mongery, and the North German has aj £300 on the grocery stock. Donnelly's Pi stock was uninsured, but the building was a insured for £100. Considerable loss is m- aj flicted on the adjoining shops, and large C< injury through salvages. The fronts of to the buildings across the street also caught ly fire once or twice, and were scorched and m injured by fire.
