Freeland, and theForesters' form of service by the D.C.E. for Hawke's Bay. The Choral Society.— The Society held another practica last evening at Ewart's Hall. There was a good attendance of members, and the practice went smoothly. Public interest m the Society is reviving, and there is every prospect of its having a most successful career. Meningitis.— By a typographical blunder last evening a person was represented to have died of menginitis — whereas the word is meningitis, or inflammation of the two membranes of the brain, a malady that almost invariably has a fatal termination. Department) who accompanied him out to the Dashwood formation contract, which he was to inspect. Mv Blair intended going on from the Dashwood to the Boulder Bank and there catching the Kanieri for Wellington. The installation is fixed for Friday, the 29th inst, at 7 p.m., after which a banquet will take place, tickets for which may be obtained from the Secretary.* A Caution to Plaintiffs.— At the E.M. Court to-day one or two persons who sued on dishonored promissory notes, neglected to furnish copies of the notes or omitted to specify the term for which they charged interest. The Magistrate pointed out that a bill of particulars should be accurate and full, and should invariably (as required by the Act) be append«d to the summons. Trespass. — We understand that a summons has been issued by a resident of Blenheim against another resident for wilful trespass on premises, and for refusing to leave when warned to do so. The alleged offence was committed on June 3rd, and the case will be heard next Wednesday. The proceedings are consequent on cer^ajn vindicatory steps recently taken m the columns of the newspapers. Ladies' Sewing Society.— A meeting of the Ladies' Sewing Society of the' Wesleyan Church was held yesterday at Mrs E. D. Nosworthy's, when a good deal of business was transacted and preparation made hi view of #ie forthcoming sale of work and gift auction. Deep regret was felt at the departure for Auckland of Mrs J. Hooper, who has occupied the position of President of the Society. On the motion of Mrs Bull, seconded by Mrs Parker, Mrs Nosworthy was unanimously elected to the Presidency. It was agreed that a deputation should visit Spring Creek and Tua Marina on Tuesday and Wednesday next, also Fairhal} at a later date, with the object of securing the cooperation of ladies m those districts. It was decided to hold ! the sale and gift auction early m October; by which effort it is hoped that ths present debt upon the parsonage will be entirely removed. The Eabiot Nuisance. — The annual report of the Superintending Inspector upon rabbit nuisance states that the .situation regarding the pest is little altered from previous years. In some localities decided headway m being made against it, whilst m others, although a check is being kept upon rapid increase, there is no. concealing the fact that each year rabbits are slowly and surely enroaching upon hitherto clean country. Ferrets have been distributed during the year as follows : — Otago, 2755; Canterbury, 367; Marlborough 480. These are apart from over 4000 liberated by private owners, all of ■yyhioh, with the exception of 700, are m the South Island. The reports of the benefits derived from ferrets 'are generally very satisfactory, aud Mr Bayly anticipates, thjat thp number bred and released next summer \yiU establish beyond doubt the usefulness of the ferret as a factor m the destruction of the rabbit. It is satisfactory to learn that there is a slight increase m the number of sheep depastured on what were the worst-infested runs of tho South, aj}d this on unimproved as wpll as improved Jands. lUbbit Bicixs. — The number oi rabbit gj'm's .exported from the colony during the year ended 31st Mai'gh &st was r2,12j?,871, valued at £108,229, the greatest portion, viz., 9,980,752, being from the Otago Provincial District.

The Fire Brigade.— Honorary members are earnestly requested to pay up arrears. A collector is going round. Postal Closing Houiis.— Some hardship is inflicted upon the business community by the closing of the afternoon mails at 3.15 and we should be glad if our esteemed Chief Postmaster would fix 3.30 as the hour for closing. Half an hour would surely be ample time m which to make up and despatch mails for the 4 o'clock train, and the extra quarter of an hour (making half an hour m all after bank closing hours) would be of great value to bankers, business men, and the general public. The request, which has the cordial support of business men generally, seems a very reasonable one, and we trust the authorities will see their way clear to grant it. The Volunteer Strength.— The total number of Volunteers m the colony on the 31st March last was 8064, comprised m 147 corps, besides 47 companies of cadets, numbering 2773 m all. The numbers of ' of each class of volunteers were as follows :— Cavalry, 13 corps, 714 men; mounted infantry, 2 corps, 99 men ; naval artillery, 20 corps, 1243 men ; artillery, 14 corps, 743 men; engineers, 3 corps, 147 men ; rifles, 94 corps, 5049 men ; honorary reserve, 1 corps, 69 men. Accident.— Mr Walter Gibson narrowly escaped having his right arm broken on Monday. He was, crossing the Hapiika, from Kaiwhare, whan he noticed a huge boulder on the roadway. He pulled up and dismounted, m order to remove the obstruction, whe the horse moved forward and k- eked out, striking Mr Gibson on the arm between the elbow and wrist, cutting it open to the bone for a length of four inches.-^ Star. Holloway's Pills.— When inclement weather checks to a considerable extent the action of the skin, an alterative is required to compensate the body by means of other channels. Holloway's Pills can be confidently recommended as the easiest, and safest means of attaining this desirable end without weakening the most delicate or incommoding the most feeble. When, from frequently recurring chills or the inhalation of impure air the blood becomes foul and the secretions vitiated, these Pills present a ready and efficient means of cleansing the former and ■ correcting the latter. By this salutary proceeding disease is arrested at its outset, its pains and inconveniences averted, and the nervous structures saved from tlie depressing effects entailed upon them by an illness. Cleakixg Salvage Sale.— All goods damaged at the late fire must be cleared, and to effect the same, great reductionsaie being made.
