Awateee Road Board. — The usual monthly meeting, which was to have been held to-day, lapsed for want of a quorum, Messrs W. S. Taylor, and T. Hall being the only members who put m an appearance. The next meeting is fixed for Monday, the 2nd January. Customs Retubns. — The Customs returns at the Wairau for November^ show a slight increase, as compared with last year. The Customs duties amounted to £513 17s 2cl, as against £493 4s 9d for the corresponding month last year ; aud the Beer duty £89 16s 9d, as against £84 2s 2d for November, 1886. Mablboeough Racing Club. — The Committee met on Saturday night at the Club Hotel, Messrs G. W. Biley (Chairman), C. Redwood, W. Barp, P. Rush (Handicapperi, and A. Redwood (Secretary) being present. The secretary was authorised to make the necessary arrangements for a totalisator and other matters required for the Boxing Day Meeting. Educational Institute.— Owing to the inclemency of the weather, there was no meeting of the Educational Institute on Saturday. English Mail.— The Kanieri brought over the English mails by the Kaikoura yesterday morning. The Post Office staff, with their usual alacrity, sorted the mails into the private boxes m very quiok time. The mails consisted of 17 bags, containing 750 letters and 1800 newspapers and book packets. The Kanieri arrived at a quarter past 10, and the mails were m the private boxes by 11 o'clock. St. Andrew's Church.— The Rev Mr McAra, of Kaikoura, conducted Divine Service at St Andrew's Church, both morning and evening, when there were -fairly good congregations, considering the inclemency of the weather. Marlbohough Scholarship. — The examinations for the Maryborough Scholar, ship at the Nelson College will take place at the Borough Council Office, Blenheim, and at the old School-house, Havelo'ck, on the 14th and 15th inst. Candidates must inform the Secretary of the Education Board, on or before Saturday next, of their intention of competing for the scholarship. The Deputation.— On Saturday afternoon the Town Clerk received the following telegram from Mr Dodson, M.H.R. : — 'Deputation waited on the Government this morning. Much regret Mayor did not come. Muncaster, watchmaker aad jeweller, has removed to his new shop, m Market-street, opposite the Criterion Hotel. The Ferries.— A suggestion has beenmade to us that boards, painted with phosphor paint, would be far more effectual at the ferries th n^flags, which can hardly be seen m hazy weather at any distance. • We commend the suggestion to the Road Board. The expense would not be very great, and probably the sawmill owners would bear a share of it. Caledonian Societj. — The annual concert given by the Marlborongh Caledonian Society takes place on Wednesday evening at Ewart's Hall. The programme is a very varied one, and as nearly all our beat amateurß are down for itema, the concert should prove a most enjoyable one, and by far the best yet given by the Society. Hard Swearing.— ln giving his decision this morning m one of the cases m which three hofelkeepers were charged with supplying liquor to a prohibited person, the Resident Magistrate very properly, and with much emphasis, drew attention to the pitiable spectaclo of persons coming into Court and swearing falsely m order to shelter themselves. The only remedy, his Worship thought, against the practice, which was getting too common, was to order a prosecution for perjury against the parties. In the cases which were brought before the Court there was the most contradictory evidence, as we formerly pointed out, and we are pleased to see that the Bench has taken cognisance of it. Test Cash.— At the reqaest of MrSinclair, who appeared for the defendant m the case of Gregory y. Smith, Mr Allen, R.M., delivered a written judgment on Saturday morning, m which he allowed plaintiff's claim, with costs. Heavy Rain, — There was a regular downpour from an early hoar on Sunday morning, and it oontlnued raining until the afternoon, when the clouda broke a little. The waters of the Opaw* are very high, but we Inar the Wairaa is safe to cross. Breaches of ths Licensing Act.— The farther hearing of the charges against Patrick O'Sullivan, John March, and Robert Humbet, licensees of the Springands, Marlboroughtowa, and Grovetown hotels, for selling liquor to a prohibited p?rson, was resumed this morning before Mr Allen, R.M., who, after hearing the evidenoe of John Allen, and sßma other witnesses, dismissed the informations laid against Messrs O'Sullivan and March, but reserved his decision m the other case till Friday morning. Mr MaNab appeared for Messrs O'Sullivan and March, and Mr Oonolly for Mr Humber. Wairau Soad Boabd. — The Board met on Thuroday, tbe lsfc instant. Present : Messrs J. Ward (chairman), Carter, Go'ulter, Avery, and Richardson. A letter was real from Mi Edwin Barker, asking if any person had the right to fence across public roads. It was resolved that he be informed that the Board had no knowledge of the road referred to, bat that the public had no right to ereot fenoeß aoross roads under the jurisdiction of the Board without its permission. An application for a transfer of license from the late Mr T. B. Reesby to A. Deß Forges was granted. > The Inspector wag instructed to place additional wires on the Taylor River dam. Messrs Carter, "Gotilter, and the Inspector were authorised to examine the Dog Point bridges, and report to next meeting.
