SPRING CREEK ROAD BOARD.

The Board met on Wednesday, July 7, at 2 p.m. The members present were :— Messrs J. FT. Kedwood (Chairman), Isaac Gifford, William Murrsy, Con. O'Dwyer, John Mills, and Rowden Soper. The following letters were read :— Frpm the Pelorus Road Board, re the Rai Valley Railway ; from Mr H. Dodson, M.H.R., re grant towards Hospital building ; from the chairman of the public meeting at Haveloc!c, forwarding resolutions m favor of Rai Valby Railway ; from \V<iirau Riad Board, enclosing copies of resolutions protesting against the action of the Govern ment m withholding the subsidies because the Board declines to anb^oribe towards the Hospital bnilding— also enclosing a petition to Parliament, praying that tlie subsidies be paid, asking the members to sign it, and forward lo Wellington to Messrs Ward and Henderson ; and fronts Mr James Robinson, asking the Board to repair the Peninsula Flax Mill Road. The Secretary was instructed to acknowledge (he receipt of the letters. With regard to the petition to Parliament against the stoppage of subsidies, the Board unanimously decided to sign it and forward at once. A petition was receivfid from Messrs Cameron, Worthylake, and others, praying for a culvert across yickerman Street. The Boarddecided not to doit at present. A deputation, consisting of Messrs H. Satherley, Match, and George Mnrray, waited on the Board, asking them to repair the road known as Hathaway'a Road. The deputation askel that the holes be filled up, and a little gravel spread upon the road, so as to make it passable. The Board said they were" averse to doiug any gravelling m winter time, but the deputation might rely upon' them doing something to it m the spring. Mr Elsmore applied to have the ditches on Vickerman-slreet cleaned out.. , The Board resolved they could not entertain it at present. The Impounder attended arid stated that as the. Act provided that he could^ only claim one shilling for impounding^' any number of cattle up to 25, he was unable to carry on the duties of tho office at the present low rale of salary, via. , £U peryeor. The Chairman asked what increase m salary he would requite. The Impounder s,id he would do it for £12 per year. ' ' ' After discussion the Board decided not to increase the salary, and to, allow the Impounder to resign. They said they had erected a pound at 'considerable expense, and. if the settlers were annoyed with cattle or horses, they must drive them to the pound themselves . Mr Murray culled the attention' of the Baord to the bad state oF the roal .leading to the parsonage at Marlboroughtown. It was resolved that the Inapeotor examine and report to next meeting. The Inspector was instructed to o.i)| for tender? by next meeting for forming the road near Paul's and widening the road near Mr James Gifford's section ; also to repair the road leading to Robinson's flaxmill. On the motion of Mr Rowilen Sopor,. seconded|hy Mr Isaac Gilford, it wjlb resolved that the Board, expend no more money m cleaning out ditches this year.
