LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
The Counoil met at half-past 2. PBOPEBTY ASSESSMENT.
The interrupted debate on the motion of Mr M^ler, that it was desirable to abolish the £500 exemption m the Property Assessment Bill, was resumed.
Mr PHARAZYN deprecated the question being disouased as a class question. - Colonel BRETT thonght the exemption should be reduced to £250.
Mr SHEPHABD moved an amendment providing that the £500 exemption Bhonld be reduced instead of abolished.
Mr SCOTLAND thought the present was not a suitable time for bringing forward the motion. People's mind? were now greatly agitated on tha subject ot taxation, and ha thought that additional taxation would have the effect of driving many out of the Colony.
Mr RICHMOND spoke again m favor o! the motion.
Mr MANTELL thought persons possessing property up to the value of £60 Bhonld pay a tax of Id m the £, otherwise they should not be a'lowed to exercise tha franchise.
Mr MILLER expressed his willingness to accept Mr Shepherd's amendment.
The motion as amended was agreed -to without a dissentient voice.
The Pablio Revenues and Pnblio Works Bill were read a eeoond timo.
